What Is a Subadult Aldabra Tortoise?

We generally consider Aldabra tortoises between approximately 5 and 15 years old to be subadults. Around 20 years old, they are considered young adults, while mature breeding animals are commonly 25 years old or older. These are general guidelines because individual growth, maturity and development can vary considerably.

Why Choose a Subadult?

Subadult Aldabras are larger, stronger and more physically established than hatchlings. Their size makes them especially attractive for zoos, wildlife parks and educational displays, where a group of larger tortoises creates a much more noticeable and engaging exhibit.

Subadults are also closer to reproductive maturity. In some older animals, the sex can be determined with considerably greater confidence than it can in hatchlings. This is especially valuable for anyone hoping to establish a future breeding group. Starting with unsexed hatchlings can eventually result in an unbalanced group—or even several animals of the same sex—after many years of raising them.

Some of our subadult Aldabras were raised here from hatchlings or retained as potential future breeding animals. Others were acquired from longtime customers, private collections, breeding facilities or zoos.
