Meet M8 and F8, an impressive pair of Aldabra giant tortoises with a very interesting combination of age, size, and future potential. M8 is a 9-year-old male measuring approximately 29 inches. F8 is a 22-year-old female measuring approximately 28 inches. F8 has already reached an age where a female Aldabra can potentially begin producing eggs. M8, despite already being slightly larger than F8, is still a young male and will need additional years of growth and maturity before I would expect him to successfully breed a mature female. That difference is what makes a pair like this particularly interesting. Large male Aldabras become increasingly difficult to find as they mature. Owners of big males generally don’t want to part with them, and their value can increase substantially as they approach the size and maturity associated with breeding. Instead of starting with two fully mature animals, a pair like M8 and F8 allows someone to start with an older female and put the additional years of growth into the younger male. I refer to this as a “sweat-equity pair.” You’re getting a female who has already reached breeding age and pairing her with a younger male that you allow to mature over time. The tradeoff is patience—the potential benefit is getting into a future pair without paying the substantially higher cost associated with acquiring a large, mature male today. This pair is not being represented as a proven breeding pair, and there is never a guarantee that two individual animals will successfully reproduce.
